Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS THE COMPETENCE MAP?

The ELTE Competence Map presents Eötvös Loránd University’s portfolio of experts and fields of expertise in a searchable form for all interested parties. In the spirit of Open Science, it is of paramount importance for ELTE to give visibility to its scientific activities towards the wider society.
By common definition, a competence map is a tool used by an organisation to “map”, that is, identify and categorise its knowledge assets. With the competence map, one can find out whom to contact within an institution regarding certain topics. Many leading universities, in frame of their conscious knowledge management activities, are engaged in making the competences, disciplines and experts in their institutions searchable. Examples include the Harvard University interface or a similar project at Humboldt University.

WHAT CAN I LOOK FOR IN THE ELTE COMPETENCE MAP?

In its current form, the ELTE Competence Map allows you to search in several different ways, which are described below (and in the individual menu items). In the Competence Map, the displayed result is always the name of one or more ELTE researchers, as well as the university faculty the researcher is affiliated with (in brackets). Clicking on the researcher’s name or the + sign next to it will display the researcher's details, research topics and contact information.

By keyword: you can search by discipline, research topic or the name of the researcher. If you enter more than one word, only results containing all of the words will be displayed.

By discipline: in this section you can list ELTE researchers from a chosen field of science. The classification is based on the so-called FRASCATI system; you can narrow down the chosen field of science on three levels.

By organisational unit: by ticking the box next to the name of a department, all affiliated researchers will be listed. If you are looking for a smaller unit, click on the name of the larger unit to see its sub-units.

Advanced search: combines the three options above: you can search by any keyword (discipline, research field or researcher’s name). To narrow down your search, enter also a discipline or an organisational unit.

WHERE DOES THE DATA IN THE ELTE COMPETENCE MAP COME FROM?

The data in the ELTE Competence Map originates from the ELTE Strategic Database, updated regularly by the university's researchers. There is a continuous synchronisation between the ELTE Strategic Database and the ELTE Competence Map to provide you with up-to-date search results.

I AM AN ELTE RESEARCHER. WHAT DO I DO IF I WANT TO CHANGE THE INFORMATION DISPLAYED ABOUT ME IN THE ELTE COMPETENCE MAP?

If you are a researcher at ELTE, you have access to the Strategic Database, where you will need to update the Disciplinary Classification, Main Research Areas and Basic Data sections in the Personal Data menu.
